Turin on Tuesday

On Tuesday I took the high speed train to Turin. Like Milan, Turin is in northern Italy. It is near the mountains and close to the border with France. Turin is a beautiful city. I had a great day there. I met a group of young people (in college) from the city who were kind enough to introduce themselves and say nice things about the United States. By this time, I needed a break from Italian food, so I visited a sushi restaurant. I guess the Italians have their own take on sushi. There were almonds on top!
My favorite person from history in Turin was a young man named Pier Giorgio Frassati. He lived from 1901 to 1924. Pier Giorgio was known for helping the poor in Turin. He would meet them in the piazza you see here and provide them with what they needed. Pier Giorgio lived during a very difficult time in the history of Italy. He was against Benito Mussolini, the ruler of Italy in his day. (It turned out that Pier Giorgio was right to be against Mussolini.) Pier Giorgio was a man who stood up for what was right in his day. This got him arrested once in Rome. In this way, he was not so different from some of our American heroes like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, and Rosa Parks. It is a very special thing to stand in the same place where such a fine person once walked.
